Would I use something as obvious as a sign or label inviting or instructing the viewer to touch, break etc… It got me thinking of fluxus boxes, whereby instructions were given and then Alice in Wonderland where objects came with tags instructing one to “Eat me”.

Photo

This is Norma Jeane’s installation at the Venice Biennale...

This is Norma Jeane’s installation at the Venice Biennale 2011.
I went to my first ever Art galleries in Madrid. I got told off several times for being too close to pieces, touching things, crossing my legs on a bench…

On one particular occasion, at the Reina Sofia gallery, I entered a room to find this piece. I immediately walked over it to find that the tiles were loose, rather than fixed to the floor. I thought that this might have been intentional and perhaps it was part of the piece that you move the tiles yourself, involving the viewer. So immediately began pulling out tiles, just for staff of the gallery to come running from adjacent rooms looking frantic and spouting angry Spanish. The piece wasn’t interactive, it was just tiles on the floor. This incident is what began me thinking that I wanted to create works that the viewer could touch, be involved with rather than feel seperate from.

Clare Twomey - Trophy

This piece consisted of 4000 ceramic birds. Within 5 hours of opening at the V&A gallery the public had stolen all of the birds despite signs that said “Please do not touch”. I think that it was Twomey’s previous works, such as “Witness” where visitors left imprints in porcelain dust and “Consciousness/Conscience” where visitors were invited to walk over unfired bone china tiles, which both dealt with human interraction and appropriateness which left gallery-goers expecting this commission to challenge the same ideals. I like how Twomey’s works have completely reversed the usual stigma that comes along with “art” you don’t have to stand 3 metres away from it and walk at snail speed to appreciate it, you’re becoming part of it.
